An open letter to my favorite blog

Posted 8 Jan 2010 by Walaa Idris

Dear ConservativeHome,

From the beginning I have been a huge fan and supporter, you are one of my daily must read. Like many conservatives, I am grateful for the community you have created and the constant and regular improvements to the site. Your continued efforts to improve and the regular stream of updates that you cleverly and constantly deliver don’t go unnoticed. Fortunately, I am a subscriber and therefore receive my updates on Blackberry, which allow me to devour them fresh and on the move.

Through the years you carried out many vital and interesting campaigns, surveys and questionnaires, some more controversial than others and by so doing you have opened and enriched the debate amongst the grassroots. At the beginning many including some conservatives were reluctant and apprehensive in supporting you, but by time that changed and you became an institution. Supported and read by many, conservatives and non conservatives alike. I am not sure about the statistics, but I am willing to bet that you are the highest visited and most read political blog in the country today. That is a well deserved influential position to be in but it is also a huge responsibility.

With the general election so close, we conservatives, more than ever need to present a united front. Like all families, we are a collection of many and varied levels of conservatism. And like most families we sometimes find it difficult to agree or get along. But like all strong families we must remember that we have one goal, one target and one aim and that is to win the coming election.

Life has taught me that sometimes you have to smile when you feel like screaming, and at times you have to say “I’ll get back to you on that” when you know the answer is “over my dead body”.

I am writing this letter to thank you for all you have done for the conservative community and the political debate, but also to ask you to watch out for those who intend to misuse our home and use it as their platform in the coming crucial weeks, watch out for the trolls who their only aim is to derail our journey. As one of your fans and biggest supporters I sometimes feel uneasy with some material – I understand and respect readers’ right to freedom of speech and expression – but we are at war and in war temporary measures are allowed and acceptable, and sometimes they are even essential.

Thank you,

Very well said, Walaa and I agree with what you say 100%. Conservative Home has rightly achieved fame and kudos for what it does – but as you say, the trolls are only there to cause us to slip on the ice. We must continue to be sure-footed and avoid their traps.

Never call a blog an institution. I cannot think of a worse insult.

Sally, I am happy that you agree with me , but then we like similar things and that makes it easy for us to agree.

Helen, I apologise, my intention was never to insult blogs and specially my favorite blog, I meant it the grand collective, educational and informative type of institution .

Walaa, I could not agree more! We must remember that we will not always agree with the party line or a particular candidate. But we must be united by those values that hold us together.

If somebody think’s they agree 100% with a party policy’s then clearly they are not fully aware. People who are supporters and detractors at the same time should move on and find the party that suit’s them or learn that life is a Compromise as is Politics, but for so long as we hold the same core values we must unite.

Keep up the good work.

Thank you for your kind comments about ConHome Walaa and I take your warning seriously. We have already taken some decisions (such as not publishing ratings of the shadow cabinet in the election run up) that I hope you’ll approve of. We’ve also launched, today, a fundraising campaign to help Tory MPs fighting Liberal Democrats (http://bit.ly/5BRahx). Jonathan Isaby and I will keep an eye on comments and ‘trolls’. We regularly check IP addresses for people posting under duplicate names and are doing so more frequently. Do let me know if you have other thoughts.

Take care, Tim
