We need more like Selma.

Last night Selma a life long Labour supporter took me to one side and whispered “I am voting Conservative this election”. I was speechless (for all of two seconds) with shock and glee, then I started to scream the house down with joy. Selma is my mother!

Her transformation started when we discussed the Conservatives’ manifesto – I could see she was getting excited by the Big Society Idea. She always believed that true success comes when you start from the bottom up and take those who can’t go it alone with you – that what excited her about the Big Society – citizens together doing what’s best for their communities.

But what made her take a look at the Tories was the Mrs Duffy incident, ironically as a Labour supporter she was a Brownite – she believed Blair had stolen the leadership from Brown and she never liked or trusted him because of it – and only voted Labour out of loyalty. But on Wednesday Brown had bitterly disappointed her while by contrast Cameron was growing on her. She said beside the manifesto, the way Cameron handles the public and difficult situations has warmed her a lot to the conservatives, specially his patience with children. To win this election we need many more like Selma – and I am full of hope that we will.

I am very excited that my mother saw the light I just wish my dad was around to witness it – but I am sure he is smiling down at us and cheering for a Conservative victory on May 6.

Come into the light, there is safety in the light. Poor Dave, if he wins he is cursed.

These moments are rare and a long time coming.

I remember being away with a group of old University friends recently with whom I used to argue politics against the left wing anti Thatcher consensus that was so cool in the 80’s.

Then at breakfast I heard one say “I’m voting Tory at the next election there is no alternative”. I nearly chocked on my cornflakes.

It only took 20 years to win that argument !

PS I’m glad for you news about your Mum.

This is a path that many of us have travelled.

It is said that wisdom grows with age, and in my case a growing understanding of the darker side of human nature convinced me that socialist principles, however laudable and idealistic they appear on paper, can never be realised in the real world.

Conservative values recognise the truths of human nature and harness our innate selfishness to generate self-improvement and wealth creation.

Sadly, conservatism often fails when financial regulation and the law goes too far in rewarding the greed of the corrupt and their cartels, heralding revolution and a new cycle of socialist government.

However, comparing left and right, I have always maintained that the right is to be preferred. Right wing governments only want your money whereas left wing regimes usually want your money and your soul as well.
